And personally I feel the levels after 1 become increasingly difficult to justify. But the more you invest in warlock, the less powerful you are as a rogue. That's worth giving up 1d6 of sneak attack damage and delaying your rogue features. it gets you the shield spell and it gets you a higher AC. It lets you get the most out of the charisma-scaling swash features. That first level of hexblade is very good.
It nets you higher sneak attack damage, more spellcasting and more flexibility in combat compared to the hexblade swashbuckler. I'd say, look over the warlock spell list and see if anything there tickles your interest and use that to make your choice. I'm tempted to say that hexblade 3/swashbuckler X is the best thing here, but the truth is that the warlock doesn't really have any first or second level spells that are very good. It will take you a lot of levels to get into those higher level spells, though. You're also not forced into melee by the class features, which is a pretty big advantage. A single booming blade with advantage from your imp familiar is better than anything that pact of the blade gets you).Īrcane trickster gets you higher level spells than just first or second, and you don't have to give up sneak attack for them. Taking three levels of hexblade may even be worthwhile for second level spells and access to a pact boon (pact of the blade is actually going to be worse than pact of the chain. If you're okay with just casting a couple first level spells, then I think one or two levels of hexblade look pretty good on a swashbuckler with booming blade.
With arcane trickster you can't afford a great casting stat, but your casting progression doesn't cost you any of your rogue stuff. With hexblade/swashbuckler you can be charisma SAD, but every level of casting progression you take loses you sneak attack damage. It depends specifically on which spells you want to cast.
